Bad News, Bad News, Good News, Best News

Bad News: Scratch Bobby Petrino off the list. The Atlanta Falcons have hired him as their new head coach. Damn.

Bad News: The Sun-Sentinel is reporting that Wayne Huizenga met with USC head coach Pete Carroll. The report says they met in Costa Rica for an interview. Yikes. Talk about not learning from your mistakes. Pete Carroll is basically Nick Saban, part 2 -- except he's not as big of an asshole. I understand it was just an interview and the Fins need to explore all avenues, but if they want to do right by the fans, as they say they do, they will pass on offering Carroll the job. The best NFL coaching prospect from the NCAA is officially off the market and on his way to Atlanta. So it's time to move on and hire someone from the NFL. No more high profile college coaches! Please! I'm saying this now, so please listen up Dolphins brass: Pete Carroll in Miami would be a disaster. Okay, moving on ...

Good News: Alex Marvez of the Sun-Sentinel writes that "Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt ... is emerging as the early front-runner." And the Herald says that the Dolphins are "turning their attention" to Cam Cameron.

Best News: This.

Stay tuned here ...

  1. I'm already resigning myself to the fact that we're gonna hire Carroll.

    I gonna puke.

  2. Hopefully Carroll won't leave USC even if Wayne makes him an offer.

  3. I stumbled upon this
    From John Clayton's Blog:

Huizenga looking for big nameposted: Sunday, January 7, 2007 | Print Entry

Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga tried to get a big name interested in the Dolphins job. More than most owners, Huizenga is willing to give all the football decision-making powers over to a coach. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might note that if Bill Parcells steps down.
Bill Cowher would interest Jones if Parcells leaves, but the former Steelers coach won't be on the sidelines again until 2008 at the earliest. If Huizenga can't come up with a big name head coach, he will likely hire an NFL assistant or former head coach.

Clayton is pretty accurate, so Cowher is probably a long shot to coach anywere in '07.

  4. Here is an interesting article about the Phins situation from Yahoo Sports:

What is it with Wayne and these high profile college coaches? Doesn't he realize Carroll's NFL winning percentage is the exactly the same to Saban's NFL winning percentage? And Carroll's been in the NFL twice already.

I swear to God if we hire Pom Poms, I'm defecting to the Jets!!

That's an interesting article NYDolfan. Cole makes some good points about waiting on Cowher, being patient w/Culpepper but not being afraid to draft a QB this year. He mentioned your boy, Dude -- Jamarcus Russell -- as a possibility but I honestly think his stock went so high after the Sugar that he's going Number 1 to the Raiders.

    And NOOOOO on Carroll!!!

The main problem I'm having with all this is that Wayne is surrounded by "business" men (i.e. Bryan Wiedmeier) and doesn't really have "football minded" people in his circle. Why else would he be wasting his time with another big name NCAA coach? Wayne is a great business man but he stinks at running teams. His whole "CEO" rant about how the team should be run is a prime example of why he keeps running this team into the ground.

He's ignoring the present: We need to figure out if Randy Mueller is staying or going and if not, hire a srtong personnel guy right away.

He's ignoring the past: Re-visiting the whole big name college coach thing.

He's tipping his hand: Proof that niether he nor his cronies know what they're doing, he asks the media and the fans for input.

Wayne needs to realize that even though running a football team IS a business, he needs to have football minds on staff and not just a bunch of pencil-pushing "yes" men who are willing to, again, give all the power to one coach and repeat the same mistake they made with Nick the Prick.
